Rafaela Lopez develops a practice spanning video, installation, sculpture, performance, drawing and collaborative projects. Informed by specific social contexts, her work engages with marginal, vernacular or non-legitimized creative practices, as well as the forms of representation collectively produced within them. Through hybrid dispositifs, she explores the ways individuals construct identities and culture by bricolaging from imaginaries shaped by mainstream culture, social media and the entertainment industry. Her projects question the necessity of the creative gesture within given social, affective or economic contexts, and examine how certain practices can shift representations and operate changes of status. Through these situated forms of creation, her work investigates the porous boundaries between art and life in the contemporary world.
